Architectural Design and Location

The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul (국립현대미술관 서울관) opened in November 2013 along the 'Culture Street' Samcheong-ro. Designed by architect 민현준, the facility occupies a site with deep historical roots that previously housed Joseon-era institutions such as 소격서, 종친부, 규장각, and 사간원. Following the Korean War, this political and cultural center was occupied by military facilities including the Capital Integrated Hospital of the Armed Forces (국군수도통합병원) and the Military Intelligence Command (기무사). The museum is built on the former site of the Military Intelligence Command in Sogak-dong, Jongno-gu.

Facility Layout and Scale

The museum is a complex cultural art center with a total floor area of 52,101m². It consists of three underground levels and three above-ground floors, housing eight exhibition halls alongside educational facilities and a library archive. Functionally, the building is divided into seven distinct wings arranged around central courtyards, preserving existing historical relics such as those from the 종친부 (Jongjinbu) and former military command areas.

Current Exhibitions

The Seoul branch currently hosts several major exhibitions. A large-scale retrospective of installation artist 서도호 runs from August 27, 2026, to February 9, 2027, covering his early works to current projects under the theme 'Installation Art: Identity' (설치미술 집 정체성). Another exhibition titled 사각사각 소곤소곤, created by artist 김준 and ten families from Seoul City Children's Hospital, explores sound recording and runs until October 25, 2026. Additionally, the MMCA×LG OLED series presents media installations that spatialize language to examine political senses in an era of polarization, open until November 29, 2026.
