Historical Evolution and Relocation

The institution began in 1986 as the Myeongga Kimchi Museum (명가김치박물관) in Pildong, Jung-gu, Seoul. It was acquired by Pulmuone the following year, becoming the Pulmuone Kimchi Museum (풀무원 김치박물관), and operated at COEX in Samseong-dong, Gangnam-gu from 1988 until July 2013. After a period of closure, it reopened in April 2015 as 뮤지엄김치간, relocating to the cultural hub of Insadong.

Exhibits and Interactive Experiences

Unlike previous iterations that relied on models, 뮤지엄김치간 displays actual kimchi varieties for direct visual inspection. Visitors can observe living kimchi lactic acid bacteria using an electron microscope and taste unique kimchi types not commonly found elsewhere. The museum also offers hands-on programs where participants make kimchi themselves to experience traditional Korean culture.

Location and Building Access

The museum is situated on the 4th through 6th floors of the Insadong Maru main building at 35-4 Insadong-gil, Jongno-gu, Seoul. It is located near Jonggak Station (Line 1) and Anguk Station (Line 3), requiring approximately a 10-minute walk from either station. To reach the entrance, visitors enter the building housing a GS convenience store and take the left elevator to the fourth floor.
