Historical Role and Administrative Transfer
국립서울현충원 (Seoul National Cemetery) serves as the national burial ground for individuals who sacrificed their lives or contributed significantly to the nation's development. The site was designated a 'Seoul Future Heritage' in 2013, recognizing its high necessity for preservation at both the municipal and national levels. On July 24, 2024, administrative management of the cemetery officially transferred from the Ministry of National Defense to the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs (국가보훈부). This shift aligns with its status as a subordinate agency dedicated to honoring state leaders, patriotic activists, and fallen soldiers.

Site Scale and Memorial Infrastructure
The cemetery occupies a vast area of 440,000 pyeong (평), housing the remains of approximately 181,000 순국선열 (patriotic martyrs) and 호국영령 (national defense spirits). Key memorial structures include the 현충문 (Memorial Gate), 현충탑 (Memorial Tower), and 위패봉안관 (Spirit Tablet Memorial Hall). Additional facilities such as the 학도의용군 무명용사 탑 (Student Volunteer Army Unknown Soldier Monument) and 충열대 provide spaces for specific commemorations. The grounds also feature a 호국추모공원 (National Defense Memorial Park) with walking paths like the 수양벚꽃길 (Cherry Blossom Path), 이팝나무길 (Yew Tree Path), 솔냇길, and 은행나무길.

Practical Considerations for Visitors

While a spring blossom event was previously scheduled, it has been cancelled; visitors should check current announcements for seasonal activities.
Shuttle buses are provided for the convenience of visitors. Given the site's size and the 18:00 gate closure, planning a visit within the 06:00 to 17:00 window is recommended to ensure adequate time for exploration before administrative facilities close. The main gates, including the 정문 (Main Gate), 동문 (East Gate), and 통문 (Passage Gates) at five locations, operate from 06:00 to 18:00 daily. Administrative facilities within the site are accessible from 09:00 to 18:00. Visitors are advised to complete their visits before 18:00 to align with gate closing times. These gates are open from 06:00 to 18:00, so it is recommended to finish visits before 18:00. The administrative facilities within the grounds operate from 09:00 to 18:00.
