Historical Origins and Naming
The institution traces its origins to the historic Sungkyunkwan, which was established in 1398 in central Seoul. It served as the most prestigious educational institution during the Joseon period, functioning simultaneously as a shrine where rituals were held regularly to honor Confucian sages and their teachings. The name of the university is derived from three specific components: "to make" (성; seong), "harmonious society" (균; gyun), and "institute" (관; gwan).
Campus Structure and Location
The university operates a dual-campus system consisting of the Humanities and Social Sciences Campus in Seoul and the Natural Sciences Campus in Suwon. The Seoul campus is situated on the same hill as Changdeokgung and Changgyeonggung, two royal palaces from the Joseon era. The Natural Sciences Campus was completed in 1979 in Suwon, establishing the current dual-campus operational model for the institution.
Key Landmarks and Heritage
A significant symbol of the university is a ginkgo tree planted in 1519, which has been designated as Natural Monument No. 59. The campus also features Sungkyunkwan Myeongnyundang (명륜당), a lecture hall historically used to teach scholars at the institution. In 1592, the Munmyo shrine on the grounds was destroyed by fire during the Imjin War.

Deep Historical Roots and Founding Details
The university’s lineage extends further back than its 1398 establishment, with the oldest records of a supreme national academy dating to 372 CE during the Goguryeo period. This early institution, known as the Taehak, shares a direct historical context with the later Sungkyunkwan. The modern university specifically inherits the tradition and history of the Sungkyunkwan, which was reorganized and established on September 3, 1398, in the Sunggyobang (숭교방) area of Hanyangbu during the Joseon era.
Institutional Identity and Classification
Sungkyunkwan University is classified as a private comprehensive research university operating within South Korea. It is commonly referred to by the abbreviations SKKU or Seongdae in English contexts, while its full Korean name is 성균관대학교 (成均館大學校). The institution maintains this private status despite its origins as a state-run national academy during the Joseon dynasty.
